THUNDER BAY — A new weather system will bring more rain to the Thunder Bay region this weekend.
On the heels of the recent downpour of 73 millimetres at Thunder Bay Airport, some forecast models show the possibility of up to 40 mm of rain from another Colorado Low that's headed for Northwestern Ontario.
Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says Environment Canada's current prediction calls for perhaps up to 15 mm in Thunder Bay.
However, if thunderstorms develop, total rainfall accumulations could be significantly higher, Flisfeder told TBnewswatch.
"A bit of concern is warranted, especially in areas affected by the previous rain event," he said.
There's a 70 per cent chance of drizzle or freezing drizzle Thursday night through Friday, followed by showers and periods of rain on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Sunshine is not expected to return until Tuesday.
May is expected to continue a pattern of colder weather than normal
Current long-range forecasts indicate that Thunder Bay will experience a colder-than-normal May.
If that holds true, it will be the fifth consecutive month of abnormally low temperatures for the area.
According to local climatologist Graham Saunders, the first four months of 2022 have not been the coldest on record, but they have been close.
The average temperature has been nearly five degrees colder so far this spring.
Saunders said the all-time record goes back to 1950, which was only slightly colder than this year to date.
