An early morning fire at a McLaughlin Street apartment forced residents into the cold Monday.

Firefighters say no injuries were reported as a result of the blaze, and residents were kept in a city bus to keep warm after exiting the building.

Fire Platoon Chief Brant Kiessig said they haven't been able to find if there were tenants in the second floor unit, which is where the fire is believed to have started.

“It is still undetermined at this time, but we had reports that that apartment was supposed to be empty,” Kiessig said. “Although there are indications that there was someone in there, but we haven’t talked to anyone who said they were residing in that apartment yet.

While it didn’t take firefighters long to extinguish the fire, Kiessig said the damage still appears to be extensive in some parts of the three-storey building.

“There is extensive damage in the apartment itself,” he said during an interview with CKPR Radio Monday morning. “We have a little bit of water damage in the first-floor apartment … but the rest of the apartment building is reasonably intact.

Kiessig added that the cause of the fire has not been determined yet.

An investigation into the blaze continues.
