Two people were taken to hospital following an early afternoon mattress fire in a south side apartment building.
Emergency crews responded to reports of smoke inside Casablanca Apartments on Simpson Street at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue district chief Kelly Patterson said there were five people inside the unit at the time, with two of them being taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with non-life threatening injuries.
He could not comment further on their conditions.
Patterson said smoke from the smoldering mattress was mostly contained to the unit, though the rest of the building did evacuate.
Any damage to the rest of the building was minimal, he added.
“The crews went in and carried out the burning mattress and the smoke is all clear and people are back in their residences,” he said.
The investigation into the cause remains ongoing.
