SIOUX LOOKOUT -- The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is investigating what appears to be a fuel spill in Sioux Lookout.

The Northwestern Health Unit ordered the community's beach closed on Friday after residents complained of fuel odour and an oily sheen on the water.

The MOECC and CN Railway are taking samples at the beach and no source has yet been determined.

"Please note CN is not taking ownership for the incident but has taken proactive steps including deploying absorbent blooms in the area," ministry spokeswoman Kate Jordan said in a written statement.

Sioux Lookout CAO Ann Mitchell said the spill did not occur near the intake for the town's water supply.

"We've worked with the drinking water provider, Northern Waterworks and drinking water to the municipality is safe but we're closely monitoring the situation," she said.
