THUNDER BAY – A 33-year-old man has been arrested after a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted and robbed of his vehicle.

Thunder Bay Police, in a release issued on Wednesday, say they were called to the area of Leslie Avenue and Black Bay Road in Current River, just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, after receiving a report of a robbery in progress.

Police say the victim, a male taxi driver, was assaulted before the taxi was stolen and sustained injuries that are considered serious, but non-life-threatening.

A suspect was located and resisted arrest, then fled from officers, but re-located while attempting to continue to evade officers. He was taken into custody.

The suspect is charged with aggravated assault, break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, resisting arrest, obstructing police, breach of probation and two counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited.

The accused appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded into custody to face a future court appearance.

It is Newswatch policy not to name people accused of a crime if it is unlikely we will follow the case through to its conclusion in court.
