GRAND PORTAGE, Minnesota — One person faces criminal charges, and additional charges are pending, after the discovery of human remains in Lake Superior near Grand Portage.
According to multiple U.S. media sources, the remains of 34-year-old Richard Anthony Balsimo of St. Paul, Minnesota were recovered by a dive team last Thursday and Friday. The reports cite a criminal complaint that says the man's body had been dismembered and placed in buckets and a tote bag.
He had been missing since June 20.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced Monday that it is treating the case as a homicide.
A man from Duluth is charged with one count of aiding an offender and one count of interfering with a dead body.
Investigators say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety.
