The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is getting involved in a different kind of art.
The Gallery is partnering with the Indian Martial Arts Toronto and a local solvent abuse centre to host peer-to-peer workshops on the Indian martial art of Kalari.
Youth Participants from Ka-Na-Chi-Hih and Impact will take part in the workshops, which explore movement, mediation, and drum making. Nadia Kurd is the curator at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and says this is the first time the program has visited the Gallery.
Gita Kolanad is the Artistic Director for Impact. The youth-led program uses Indian martial art forms to bring focus, discipline and concentration to youth in underserved parts of the country.
She says Kalari comes from Southern India and is based on animal positions, and fast attack and defence patterns.
The final public Kalari performance will take place at the Gallery on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Admission to the performance is free with art gallery admission.
