At-large races swells to 23, with 7 new candidates

Brent Boyko adds his name to the McIntyre race, ensuring no acclimations in Thunder Bay in 2022.

THUNDER BAY – The at-large race grew by six candidates on Thursday, and Albert Aiello finally has some competition in McIntyre Ward.

Adelina Pecchia, the Conservative candidate in Thunder Bay-Superior North in the last federal election, was joined on the penultimate day of the nomination period for the Oct. 24 municipal election by Rajni Agarwal, James Glavish, Tracey MacKinnon, Bob Hupka and Donnalee Morettin.

There are now 22 candidates in the running for the five at-large seats, one more than ran in the 2018 municipal election.

Brent Boyko signed on to run in McIntyre Ward, just the second candidate to do so, joining incumbent Albert Aiello in the race.

All other races remained the same, with one day to go before nominations close.

There are currently 54 candidates who have filed nomination papers, seven fewer than the 61 who were on the ballot four years ago.

There are four candidates each in McKellar, Northwood, Westfort and Neebing, six in Red River and three in both Current River and two in McIntrye.

Five candidates have filed to run for mayor, six fewer than in 2018. Thirteen of the 54 are women.
