ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK — An investigation is underway following the death of a backpacker while hiking on Lake Superior's Isle Royale.
The U.S. National Park Service released details of the incident Wednesday.
It said a 37-year-old woman from Battle Creek, Michigan was hiking with her partner late Monday afternoon near Lake LeSage in the interior of Isle Royale National Park.
During the hike she experienced sudden onset medical complications, eventually became unable to walk, fell unconscious and then stopped breathing.
Attempts to revive her with CPR were unsuccessful.
Other backpackers in the vicinity texted Michigan State Police via 911, and they relayed the coordinates so park rangers and paramedics could locate the party Monday evening.
Park staff arrived Tuesday morning to transport the party from a remote location.
Isle Royale is located about 50 km southeast of Thunder Bay.
