THUNDER BAY — A section of Balmoral Street that has been under construction for several months is expected to reopen later this week.

The four-lane arterial roadway has been closed between Alloy Drive and Central Avenue since June, which was extended up to Jasper Drive in July, and then to Beverley Street in the last few weeks.

Project engineer Mike Vogrig said the road itself is ready for traffic, but the hold up has been the wait for new traffic lights to be in place and activated at the intersection of Balmoral and Central Avenue.

"Once those signals are operating and running, the road will be fully open again," he said on Wednesday. "[There's] too much traffic to open up without that intersection up and running."

Vogrig said the expectation had been for the work to reopen in late October or early November.

The contract, valued at $7.2 million, was awarded in June but came after weeks of delay while the city waited for the outcome of a federal and provincial infrastructure funding application.

The work is the last phase in a major reconstruction of Balmoral that started in 2016, beginning at William Street and advancing north.
