Derek Edwards knows what’s funny to Thunder Bay.
The veteran Canadian Comedian will hit the stage at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium June 17, part of his cross-country Baloney and Wine Tour, and is expected to bring a bit of local flair to his set.
“I've toured for so many years that I can change things up a bit to appeal to or reference to the person sitting in the room,” he said during a phone interview with tbnewswatch.com from his home in Toronto.
His relatable material comes from his 28-years of comedic experience, and changing bits to better suit the local tastes of his audience is something that’s become second nature for him.
He understands that Edmonton residents have a different outlook than someone living in Thunder Bay.
Appealing to the Northern Ontario crowd won’t be a challenge for Edwards. He know the Sleeping Giant, the Hoito, and the potholes.
“I feel like there’s a hozer deep within most of the folks in the Thunder Bay crowd. There’s a plaid wearing, drinking, great human being and for this show that’s what I am trying to appeal too,” he said.
“I will bring the Northern hozer for you to scrutinize on the stage at the community auditorium.”
Edwards doesn’t try and formulate what people will like, he goes with what jumps out at him. His material is based on what makes him laugh, or cringe, and can find something funny hidden in discomfort.
“I try it out on stage, maybe it works maybe it doesn’t. You have to kind of shit-can some of the stuff you thought could be gold.”
Despite the experience, coming up with new relatable material is never easy.
“To have the material generalized, generic and applicable to everyone out there well I can’t find anything more demanding than that.”
His newest tour Baloney and Wine tour focuses on infuriating moments, life experiences, and life in Canada.
