The controversial beacons on Thunder Bay's redeveloped waterfront were lit up for the first time Thursday night.
The 65-foot high beacons at Prince Arthur's Landing came with a price tag of more than $900,000. They were installed last month at the end of Piers 1 and 3, and feature a cascade of lights down the face of the beacons.
They also incorporate story-telling voices at their bases.
The look of the beacons and the price tag bothered some members of city council when they were presented back in July, but the contract was approved by the majority of council.
The beacons will be a focal point of the waterfront community celebration being held next Friday night.
