DRYDEN - A bear family that had spotted several times in the town of Dryden over the last week have been safely captured and relocated to an area well north of the city, police say.

With the assistance from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Dryden Police announced on Thursday, Oct. 8, a sow bear and her cubs who had been roaming throughout the community were safely moved after spending the week in the northwestern community. Chief Douglas A. Palson with Dryden Police Service said the bears had spent the last week in and out of backyards.

Although police received roughly a dozen calls regarding sightings over the bear family, there were no violent incidents, Palson said.

“Of course the concern is that any time when you have people out and about in residential areas that something could happen,” he said, adding the bears spent most of their time rummaging through garbage and focused on crabapple trees.

Police say the ministry had set up a trap last week in order to relocate the bears and were eventually successful on Wednesday after moving the trap several times.
