Bear warning signs under review at park

Though the Ontario Parks agency says it “has not received any information about an increase in bears sightings at Ouimet Canyon,” recent social media posts have suggested otherwise.

PASS LAKE – Provincial park staffers were to visit Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park on Wednesday to conduct an assessment on existing signs that warn about black bears.

“If new signage is necessary, staff will post caution signage indicating that bears are in the area,” a Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks spokesman said.

Though the Ontario Parks agency says it “has not received any information about an increase in bears sightings at Ouimet Canyon,” recent social media posts have suggested otherwise.

One visitor who went to the park last week posted they saw eight different black bears, including a mother with cubs.

So far this spring, the number of reports made to a provincial hotline about bear sightings has been slightly less than previous years.
