THUNDER BAY – The deep freeze that’s set in over Thunder Bay is going to have a little staying power.
According to Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Peter Kimbell, it really shouldn’t come as surprise that the temperatures have dipped to -20 C and lower on Jan. 6 in Thunder Bay.
“That’s normal. We expect that in Thunder Bay in wintertime. The normal high this time of year is -9, the normal low is -20, so we’re getting that kind of weather, essentially,” Kimbell said.
Monday’s high is expected to hit -10 C and the low is estimated to be -18 C.
“We’re pretty much in the ballpark for normal,” Kimbell said.
“We actually have a little bit below normal temperatures coming in the next couple of days, with a high of -15 tomorrow and a high of -15 on Wednesday, so below normal temperatures. But this is Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, where we expect cold temperatures in January.”
It’s nothing new, he added.
“Have we seen these kinds of temperatures before? Absolutely. It’s nothing new for Thunder Bay.”
That said, there is expected to be a brief reprieve from the cold, with temperatures expected to warm up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before dipping back to -17 C on Monday.
On Friday the mercury could reach as high as -3 C.
