Bike lanes set to close for winter

City says cyclists can still use bike lanes in winter, but they may be used for snow storage and won't be cleared.

THUNDER BAY — The city is closing its bike lanes in preparation for the arrival of winter weather.

Cyclists are free to use bike lanes, which officially close on Wednesday, with the caveat they won’t be cleared during the winter and may be used for snow storage. On-street parking restrictions may also be lifted in some spots.

“All riders choosing to use bike lanes and roadways during the winter are advised to exercise caution,” said Darrik Smith, mobility coordinator at the city, in a release issued on Tuesday.

“Further, all road users are reminded to be aware of other vehicles, be courteous and share the road.”

Bike lanes are expected to reopen on May 1, but the date is weather dependent.
