THUNDER BAY – Police say a recent scam defrauded a Thunder Bay resident out of more than $25,000.

In a release issued on Wednesday, Thunder Bay Police said the victim was allegedly contacted by an individual claiming to be with a company promising to save money on their bills. The company promised to cover the cost of the bill, while the victim would only pay a discounted amount.

The victim was of the belief the bills had been paid and their accounts were in good standing.

It turned out not to be true and the bill payments were either revoked or not paid and the scammer made off with the money.

TBPS’s economic crime unit is urging family members and friends to speak to those who may be vulnerable to being targeted by this type of scam.

They also advise the community that if something seems too good to be true, it likely is too good to be true.
