THUNDER BAY - The winter storm warning that was in effect this weekend has been lifted, but the region isn’t out of the woods yet.

Environment Canada issued a blowing snow advisory Sunday afternoon for the city of Thunder Bay and surrounding region.

Northwesterly wind gusts from 50 to 70 km/h are expected throughout Sunday. With snow that has fallen in the last 12 hours, the strong winds will create blowing snow and poor visibility.

The winter storm warning that was issued earlier this weekend and was calling for between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow has been replaced by the blowing snow advisory and snowfall amounts are expected to only be a few centimetres.

Poor visibility due to blowing snow has already resulted in several highway closures along the North Shore, including Highway 11 between Nipigon and Cochrane.

Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution while travelling on area roadways.

The high winds are expected to diminish overnight.
