THUNDER BAY — For the seventh time since June, blue-green algae has been confirmed in a Thunder Bay-area lake.

The district health unit said Tuesday the latest occurrence is at Marie Louise Lake in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks used laboratory tests to identify the algae in a water sample collected from the lake on Sept. 21.

Water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about two weeks after it has dissipated.

Pets should also be kept away from the water, as their smaller size makes them even more vulnerable to toxins that are present in some blooms.

Anyone coming into contact with blue-green algae should wash well with soap and water to remove the microscopic organisms.

The algae has also been detected this year at two beaches along Lake Superior in Shuniah, Two Island Lake, One Island Lake, Trout Lake and Kenogamisis Lake near Geraldton.
