THUNDER BAY — The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae in a water sample collected at East Loon Lake.

In a report issued Tuesday, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit  said the sample was collected on Aug. 22 and 23, 2022.

It said it's important to remember that water should be avoided whenever a blue-green algae bloom is present, and for about two weeks after it has dissipated.

The water should not be used for drinking, other household purposes or for swimming.

Blue-green algae may produce toxins that pose a health risk to people and animals.

Loon Lake is about 55 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, in the Municipality of Shuniah.

To date this season, the only other location in the Thunder Bay district where blue-green algae has been confirmed is at Icarus Lake, near Northern Light Lake.
