THUNDER BAY — Dozens of photographers flocked to the Thunder Bay waterfront on the weekend for a close-up view of large chunks of blue ice that have piled up along the shoreline.
Photos published on Facebook by the group Capturing The Bay show pieces of ice along the north waterfront in Current River against the backdrop of the bay which is largely open water.
One photographer described it as a unique opportunity to capture images in a convenient location.
He said there's blue ice all along the Lake Superior shoreline both south and east of Thunder Bay, but "it's a privilege" to have the opportunity to be able to get these images so close to home.
A spokesperson for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said the department cautions anyone against climbing on the ice chunks or approaching the water because of the risk of tragic consequences.
