Bobcat sighted in Thunder Bay

Footage captures appearance from elusive bobcat behind Ray Boulevard home Wednesday.

THUNDER BAY – It didn’t last long, but footage from Thunder Bay resident Mel Phair’s backyard camera has afforded a rare glimpse of the elusive bobcat.

When cameras showed movement behind his Ray Boulevard home Wednesday, Phair was expecting the usual visit from a raccoon or other common backyard creature.

Instead, he watched as the large cat emerged from between his sheds and strode casually across his yard.

“I watched the thing about three times to make sure what it was, then I posted it on a local [group] and phoned the neighbours to let them know,” he said.

He’s no stranger to encounters with wild animals after previously living in the country, he said, but had never seen a bobcat in the city before.

“The only concern I have is with the kids in the neighbourhood – they wouldn’t know what it is to see it.”

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry advises residents never to approach a bobcat. If encountered, do not run, but try to appear larger and back away slowly while talking firmly to the animal.

Phair was happy for the rare chance to spot a bobcat, but didn’t hesitate when asked if he hopes the cat will make a return appearance.

“I hope he doesn’t.”
