THUNDER BAY -- A border guard has lost his job for allegedly affiliating himself with known organized crime figures.
While details were light, a news release issued by the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner states the Canada Border Services Agency officer was found to have broken the Values and Ethics Code for the Public Service and the CBSA’s code of conduct.
Serious breaches that led to the officer’s termination include:
- Not conducting secondary examinations on individuals who had surveillance reports issued against them
- Identifying himself as a border services officer to police officers during a police operation that resulted in the arrest of two of his acquaintances
- Affiliating with known organized crime figures in Thunder Bay
In a report issued by the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, the border services officer’s affiliation with known criminals “rendered him unable to perform his duties in an objective manner and could potentially harm the CBSA’s reputation.”
Mario Dion, Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, tabled the report in Parliament Thursday.
“I am satisfied with the CBSA’s response to this report, which includes the officer’s dismissal, as a result of my findings and the Agency’s own internal investigation,” Dion states in a news release issued to media Thursday morning.
