THUNDER BAY – The land border to the United States will remain closed until at least June 21.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday took to Twitter to confirm the land border to the United States will remain closed, as calls grow louder for a concrete re-opening plan.

“To protect your health and limit the spread of COVID-19, we’re extending the measures currently in place by another 30 days. Non-essential travel between our two countries remains restricted until June 21st,” Trudeau tweeted.

The American’s Department of Homeland Security confirmed the continued closure, which has been in place since March 2020.

“We’re working closely with Canada (and) Mexico to safely ease restrictions as conditions improve,” reads a tweet on the department’s official Twitter feed.

The land border is open to essential travel.

Non-essential travelers crossing back into Canada must quarantine for 14 days.
