With parking expected to be a premium in the downtown south core, Coun. Ken Boshcoff says it’s time to consider the partial removal of a Brodie Street taxi stand near the still-under-construction amalgamated courthouse.
Boshcoff and Neebing Coun. Linda Rydholm on Monday intend to ask city administration for a report on the ramifications of reducing the taxi stand from three spaces to one. The two councillors are members of the parking authority and are bringing the motion to council on its behalf.
“For a couple of years there has been a hugely underutilized taxi stand. They’ve been waiting for the buses to move (from city hall). Basically the Parking Authority is trying to maximize the number of spaces around the courthouse,” Boshcoff said.
Rydholm, reached via email, agreed.
"The new courthouse has been built on a former city parking lot which served the south core. The parking authority wants to maximize the number of on-street public parking spaces and to ensure the location of an adequate taxi zone before the new courthouse opens."
Boshcoff said the move would free up at least two spaces for public use, which would be beneficial not only to users of the courthouse but patrons of nearby businesses.
“This would be very helpful to people in the city. They like to park close and we like to provide the parking to make it fit,” he said.
