THUNDER BAY - Rehabilitation work on the Boulevard Lake Dam to begin next week will see the pedestrian walkway closed and water levels lowered.

The project will begin on Monday, May 4 and is expected to be completed at the end of 2021. The pedestrian walkway over the dam will be closed for the duration of the work.

“The Boulevard Lake Dam is approximately 100 years old,” said Mike Vogrig, the city’s project engineer overseeing the Boulevard Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project. “Repairs and improvements are necessary to restore parts of the Dam’s structure that have deteriorated and to meet current regulatory requirements in the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act.”

At the end of June, water levels on the lake will be lowered for the installation of cofferdams needed to complete the work.

Activities such as swimming, canoeing, and kayaking will be suspended in the summer as the work is underway.

The rehabilitation project includes repairing and strengthening the concrete on the dam and installing new mechanical gates to improve operations.

The walkway over the dam will also be widened and more lighting will be installed.

Residents are asked to follow all signage and detour routes and use extra caution near construction zones.
