Boulevard Lake water level fluctuating during repairs (2 Photos)

The water level will be lowered again to reconfigure a coffer dam

THUNDER BAY — The water level in Boulevard Lake has gone up again lately, but it's not a sign that the work crew that's rehabilitating the dam is about to wrap up their work.

The lake had to be emptied this year to enable the city's contractor to start the $8.6 million repair job.

By June, the flow down the Current River was close to what it might have been before Boulevard Lake was created around the turn of the last century.

The city took advantage of the opportunity over the summer to clean some of the litter that had accumulated on the lakebed.

Recent rain has brought the water level up somewhat, and a spokesperson for the city says the plan is to maintain it there for the time being.

However it will be dropped again shortly to reconfigure the cofferdam that diverts water away from the worksite.

This will allow the crew to pour the concrete that's required for the structure near the gatehouse at the north end of the dam.

Although the water level on the lake side of the dam is expected to return to normal by next summer, allowing beaches to reopen, work on top of the dam and the downstream side will continue next  year.
