One of the city's biggest box stores is about to get even bigger. Officials at WalMart have announced plans to expand the store into a Super WalMart.

In just a couple of weeks, construction is expected to start. The store will be completely renovated and expanded by 40,000 square feet. The remodeled store will feature wider shopping aisles, more merchandise and a full-sized grocery section. The Thunder Bay Walmart was built in 1994 and was one of the first to open in Canada.

Store Manager, Ryan Holomego said the expansion is needed and having the addition of a full-service grocery area will create a one-stop shop for residents. He said the year long renovations shouldn't cause any inconvenience for shoppers.

More than 200 construction jobs and 100 in-store jobs will be created with the expansion. Holomego would not comment on speculation about a second WalMart possibly being planned for Thunder Bay. The Super WalMart is set to be complete in the summer of 2011.
