THUNDER BAY — A man convicted of manslaughter in the death of Barbara Kentner has been granted an additional six months of day parole.

Brayden Bushby was sentenced in 2020 to just under eight years of jail time after being found guilty of throwing a metal trailer hitch at two women walking in January 2014.

The hitch struck Kentner in the stomach, who later died from her injuries.

Bushby was granted day parole in September 2023 for a period of six months after originally being denied full parole.

In documents posted by APTN reporter Dennis Ward, the Parole Board of Canada states that Bushby has made progress during his sentence.

"The CSC (Correctional Services Canada) states that you are able to speak with your parole officer more openly about your crime now and have reportedly accepted the severity of our index offence. You denied targeting the victim because she was Indigenous," it reads.

The document states that despite stability and gains made, Bushby would further benefit from continued day parole privileges.

"They note you are still a young man who presents with a history of impulsive and immature behaviour, alcohol abuse and adherence to negative peer pressure."

The PBC said it would be further beneficial to have a "cautious" and "conservative" approach with Bushby - including "a gradual progression to an eventual full parole release."

During Bushby's first round of day parole, he was given conditions to follow that included not consuming, purchasing, or possessing alcohol, not entering establishments where the primary source of income is the sale of alcohol, no contact with Kentner’s family, and follow a treatment plan arranged by a parole supervisor.
