FORT FRANCES - A Fort Frances resident has tested positive for COVID-19, the Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed.

The individual is an adult who recently returned from international travel. Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ian Gemmill says the individual was seen, assessed, and tested in Winnipeg, and is now recovering in self-isolation in Fort Frances.

"To protect the health of the public and to prevent community spread, NWHU immediately began to identify potential sites of exposure and has ensured that the limited number of persons who have come in close contact with the person are in self-quarantine,” Gemmill says in a statement.

The health unit says it does not believe the virus is circulating in the region, while noting the case was contracted outside of Canada.

The organization urges residents to find more information through the Northwestern Health Unit website.
