The Ministry of Transportation was forced to change its construction plans, but only that work led to massive traffic jams on Highway 61 Tuesday morning.
Cars were backed up for several kilometres on the highway near the Resolute Forest Products mill as MTO crews began inspection work on the Kam River bridge, which led to the closure of one of the highway’s lanes .
That stretch of highway has already witnessed increased traffic volumes ever since the James Street Bridge fire closed that travel option for area motorists.
The MTO eventually pulled its crews from the bridge work after seeing the traffic problems it was leading to.
The MTO has rescheduled the bridge work to take place overnight, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., starting Wednesday night.
