TORONTO – A near shutout in the third quarter was just enough to propel the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team past the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night.

The T-Wolves, who entered the road contest on a four-game losing streak, outscored the Varsity Blues 18-2 in the third and went on to defeat their opponent 61-57, improving to 3-6 with one game left in the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.

As she’s done all season, guard Ally Burke led the way, putting up a game-high 22 points. Kirpa Brar, won of the best bench players in the OUA this season, added 19 in a reserve role for the T-Wolves, who trailed 32-30 at the half.

Ellen Ougrinov led the Varsity Blues with 20 points and Sabrina Nero completed the double-double with 13 points and an equal number of rebounds.

The two teams will meet again in Toronto on Saturday night.
