Cache of stolen parking meters recovered from a backyard shed (3 Photos)

One hundred double-headed meters were stolen from the parking authority last year.

THUNDER BAY — A cache of stolen parking meters has been discovered in a shed in a north-side Thunder Bay neighbourhood.

The Thunder Bay Parking Authority says city police have recovered many of the appproximately 100 meters that were stolen last winter.

Technicians are now inspecting the equipment to determine what might be put back in service.

"We're crossing our fingers," manager Jonathan Paske told Tbnewswatch on Tuesday, adding that metal housings can possibly be reused but the electronic mechanisms inside are less likely to be salvageable.

The double-headed meters cost about $1,000 apiece to replace.

Most of them were stolen late last year in the north downtown area.

"We haven't seen anything like this before," Paske said. "It was an unprecedented event."

It wasn't immediately clear Tuesday how authorities became aware of a shed at a Johnson Avenue address where someone had stored the broken meters.

Thunder Bay Police said they are continuing their investigation.
