THUNDER BAY -- A woman who was in the Kaministiquia River made it to shore safely Friday night before Thunder Bay Fire Rescue arrived on scene.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were called to the river at about 6 p.m., responding to a call of a woman and a baby in the water.

Witnesses said that once the woman reached the shore, she was screaming that her baby was still in the water. Crews entered the water to search for the child, but when police and EMS arrived on scene the first responders together were quickly able to determine there was no one else in the water and that all the women's children were accounted for at a safe location.

"Nonetheless, a thorough surface and shoreline search was conducted by fire fighters in an inflatable boat along with several fire fighters in immersion suits swimming along the shore to probe for a possible victim," said Platoon Chief John Kaplanis in a release.

The woman was treated on scene for hypothermia and take to hospital for further treatment.

The call came in at about 6 p.m.
