THUNDER BAY — A new and improved Canada Games Complex is set to open its doors on Oct. 18, boasting upgrades to washrooms, changerooms, and building efficiency.
The complex closed on June 4 while workers installed accessible washrooms and upgraded showers in the men’s members and women’s day use changerooms, a new gender-neutral barrier-free changeroom, new boiler system, and HVAC upgrades.
The reopening timeline is roughly in line with the city’s estimate of a four-month closure for the $3-million project, which required draining the pool and taking the boiler that heats it offline.
Around 80 per cent of the cost will be covered by the federal government through its Green and Inclusive Community Building Program.
The renovations are expected to slash net annual greenhouse gas emissions by 276 tonnes, and utility costs by $128,000 a year.
Staff have said the 42-year-old building will require additional major upgrades over the coming decade in order to keep operating efficiently.
Canada Games Complex memberships were placed on hold during the closure and extended for an equivalent amount of time. Members also had the option to cancel their memberships and receive a credit or a refund.
