THUNDER BAY — If you're expecting something important in the mail, you might have to wait until later in the week.
Early Tuesday afternoon, due to what it described as worsening weather conditions, Canada Post issued a "red alert" for the Thunder Bay area and recalled all delivery employees.
Heavy snow that arrived in the city Tuesday morning initially resulted in a "yellow alert," a condition in which carriers make efforts to deliver but delays are possible.
"The safety of our employees is our number one priority," a Canada Post spokesperson said.
One rural carrier told Newswatch the snow posed significant challenges.
"Our supervisors told us to use our discretion, but before I had a chance to get out, several workers had already come back, and they warned me that it was terrible out there, and just not worth the effort."
He explained that, as a rural carrier, he uses his own vehicle to deliver mail.
"It was really crazy out. The snow was really reducing visibility," he said, adding that a co-worker had observed half a dozen collisions on the road earlier in the morning.
Canada Post said it encourages customers to clear snow and ice from their walkways, stairs, and driveways, to ensure safe access to the front door when mail service resumes.
