THUNDER BAY — Despite a province-wide red alert issued by Canada Post to halt mail delivery, the Crown corporation has clarified that carriers are still out in several northern municipalities.
Canada Post issued the red delivery service alert “for the province of Ontario” due to inclement weather and snow. Much of southern Ontario was battered by a winter storm Wednesday night and into Thursday.
Various snow and winter storm-related watches and warnings remained in effect for much of the southern part of the province Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, Canada Post told Newswatch that “on clarification from our local operations, we are delivering (in) Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins and Kapuskasing.” The rest of the province, a spokesperson said, remains under a red delivery service alert due to the weather.
Newswatch asked for further clarification about municipalities west of Thunder Bay. Canada Post said the indicated communities were "the most up-to-date information on communities impacted."
A red service alert suspends mail delivery for the affected areas, and recalls delivery agents who are already out. That means there is no regular collection or delivery of mail during the duration of the alert, which is lifted once conditions improve.
