THUNDER BAY – Expect to see many people in the community sporting bright yellow pins for the rest of the month.
The Canadian Cancer Society is launching their annual daffodil campaign throughout the month of April as a show of solidarity and support for those battling cancer.
Community fundraising specialist Ashley Rooney said this is the third year the distinctive pins have been used exclusively for the campaign, rather than actual flowers, and they’ve become quite popular.
“We have daffodils for sale all around town and we ask that people make a donation and wear the flower to show people they’re not alone when facing cancer,” she said at the campaign kickoff held at the Scarnati Building on the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition grounds.
“When you walk around in the month of April you definitely notice people wearing the pins everywhere you go.”
Last year the daffodil campaign raised $27,000 in the region, which spans from the Manitoba border to White River.
“The money we raise goes towards the best cancer research in Canada and it also goes towards our support services locally,” Rooney said, identifying their patient transportation and wheels of hope program as two services that depend on the fundraising dollars.
The pins are available at various locations throughout the month.
