Canadian Rangers find missing Peawanuck woman (2 Photos)

The woman was wearing only light clothing in sub-zero weather.

PEAWANUCK, Ont. — The search for a missing woman in the isolated community of Peawanuck ended successfully early Sunday morning.

Members of the Canadian Rangers spent five hours looking for the 21-year-old woman, and finally found her sitting without any shoes by the ice-filled Winisk River.

The woman had walked into the bush wearing only a light jacket, after a family dispute.

The Canadian Army authorized the use of part-time reservists who are members of the Peawanuck Ranger Patrol.

When Master Corporal Pamela Chookomoolin – riding an ATV – found the woman, the temperature had fallen to minus 2 C.

She was taken back to the community unharmed.

Peawanuck is 800 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, near the Hudson Bay coast.
