THUNDER BAY -- A local fluorescent light recycling depot will be shutting down next week.

Thunder Bay was one of the first communities in Ontario to have a recycling depot for the CFL bulbs.

After more than a decade, and due to a lack of funding, EcoSuperior will stop accepting fluorescent bulbs at its Red River Road location.

Executive director Ellen Mortfield says it's unfortunate but a change in the provincial funding model means ending the program.

Mortfield hopes people continue to recycle fluorescent bulbs at other locations like the hazard waste depot at the City landfill.

She adds that the EcoSuperior depot was popular drop off location.

Mortfield says it's important to properly dispose of fluorescent lights due to the small amounts of mercury contained in the bulbs.
