THUNDER BAY— A Thunder Bay lawyer and federal crown prosecutor had his charges withdrawn as a result of a peace bond last week in a Thunder Bay virtual courtroom.

The two charges against Ronald Poirier, 72, one count of forcible confinement and assault were laid by Thunder Bay Police which stemmed from an Aug. 28, 2020 incident.

Both counts were withdrawn in favour of a 12-month peace bond, court documents show. His conditions include keeping the peace toward one named complainant.

According to crown prosecutor Kenrick Abbott, Poirier was arrested following a physical dispute between himself and the complainant.

If Poirier fails to follow his conditions, he could be forced to pay $500 to the courts.

Poirier is a lawyer practicing in private in Thunder Bay, according to the Law Society of Ontario website. He is also retained as a federal crown agent through the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC).

In January, the PPSC confirmed to Tbnewswatch in an emailed statement  Poirier was one of their agents and they were aware of the situation and that his files had been reassigned.

A spokesperson with the PPSC said last week there are currently no files assigned to Poirier and no further details were provided.

Poirier’s co-accused, David Poirier, is scheduled to appear on May 5 to take a plea, according to court documents.
