THUNDER BAY – Ready? Okay! Thunder Bay cheerleaders competed on Wednesday in the second annual OFSAA regional cheerleading competition.

The stands were full of families and community members who came out to cheer on the cheerleaders as six regional cheer teams competed to take home first place.

Christine Witiluk, head cheerleading coach for St. Ignatius, said the day’s event was awesome despite some minor hiccups.

“We had to wait a pretty long time for judges deliberation,” she said. “Which is completely out of our control because some of our judges were across Canada - B.C., southern Ontario, and we had to wait for them to deliberate and come up with the scores."

Baily Jarzabek, one of the cheerleaders competing in the event, said it was great to be able to go head to head with so many other talented teams.

“We had many good teams here today and I wish we could all win first place, but it feels pretty good,” she said.

The St. Ignatius Falcons took home first place followed by the Hammarskjold Vikings in second and the Westgate Tigers in third.

The event also featured two demonstration performances from École Gron Morgan and Bishop EQ Jennings, as well as two dance performances from the St. Ignatius and St. Patrick dance teams.
