GRASSY NARROWS, Ont. - A prominent First Nations leader in northwestern Ontario is facing criminal charges.

Grassy Narrows First Nation Chief Simon Fobister was arrested twice this month by Treaty Three Police.

Court records show that the 62-year-old man was charged with assault and with breach of an undertaking to abstain from alcohol after an alleged incident on Sunday, Jan. 21 at Grassy Narrows.

He had been charged with impaired driving on January 5.

None of the charges have been proven. Fobister is scheduled to appear in court again next month.

He has helped spearhead efforts to get government action on the ongoing impact on his community of mercury pollution in the English-Wabigoon River system.

Most recently, Fobister successfully fought to convince the federal government to build a treatment centre in Grassy Narrows.
