THUNDER BAY — Police say a young cyclist involved in a collision with a vehicle in the north end late Monday afternoon sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The 12-year-old boy was hurt around 5:30 p.m. in a collision with a pickup truck on Huron Avenue, between Matthews and Royal Streets.

In a brief statement Tuesday morning, TBPS said members of the traffic unit are continuing their investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson for the City of Thunder Bay said the city plans to follow up with police once they've finished the investigation, in order to evaluate the possible need for an additional crosswalk on Huron Avenue.

The city installed a pedestrian crossover at Huron and Shuniah Street in 2022, and maintains a crosswalk with a crossing guard in front of Vance Chapman School on Huron Avenue.

The spokesperson said further crossovers are not currently in the city's capital budget forecasts, based on traffic counts in the Huron Avenue/Matthews Street location which found low pedestrian volumes in that section.
