THUNDER BAY – The carousel at Chippewa Park will reopen on Saturday, a week after a vehicle crashed into the historic attraction.

Two local residents were charged in the incident after causing damage to the recently-restored structure.

Parks manager Cory Halvorsen said that luckily, a chariot that had not been restored and was already slated to be replaced had sustained the worst of the damage.

“The amusement rides, and especially the historic carousel, are a major draw for Chippewa Park,” he said. “We are grateful that the damage to the carousel was limited and that we were able to repair it in time for our visitors to enjoy before the end of summer.”

Halvorsen could not yet comment on how much those repairs would cost, saying that could be the subject of a potential claim.

City staff and outside contractors completed repairs and the ride was inspected and tested in compliance with Technical Standards and Safety Authority standards.

The amusement rides at Chippewa Park operate 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays until Labour Day.
