THUNDER BAY -- The Liberals have tapped Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch'ng to fill the electoral shoes of longtime MPP and cabinet minister Michael Gravelle.

Ch'ng, first elected municipally in 2014 and re-elected four years later, accepted the nomination after Gravelle announced last month he was stepping away from politics following a return of cancer, leaving the party mere weeks to find a candidate ahead of the June 2 provincial election.

“Thunder Bay is where I’ve lived, worked, and served my entire life,” Ch'ng said in a release issued on Wednesday by the Ontario Liberal Party.

“It’s a diverse, vibrant city with the brightest of futures. I want to continue playing a part in shaping the future of this city I love so much – and so I’m honoured to have this new opportunity to serve my community as their representative at Queen’s Park.”

Ch'ng, who was unsuccessful seeking the federal Liberal nomination in 2019 in Thunder Bay-Rainy River, got a thumbs up from Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca.

“As a small business owner and city councillor who has lived in Thunder Bay her entire life, Shelby understands how important infrastructure, community engagement, and economic development are across Northern Ontario,”Del Duca said.
“Shelby was a key contributor to the rebuilding of Thunder Bay’s South Core – so she’ll be a fierce advocate for Thunder Bay at Queen’s Park.”

Ch’ng owned a successful business in Thunder Bay’s south core for nearly a decade. She worked as a strategic advisor to the grand chief for the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and currently serves as the education partnership program liaison at Matawa Education and Care Centre.

Ch'ng will be up against fellow Coun. Peng You, who is running for the Conservatives and Lise Vaugeois of the NDP, who nearly knocked off Gravelle in the 2018 Ontario election. Tracey McKinnon is running under the Green Party banner.
