Christmas Tree drop-off sites are now open

Thunder Bay’s Christmas tree drop-off sites are open until Jan. 12.

THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay says residents can discard expired Christmas trees at nine locations across the city.

The coordinator for the city’s waste department, Lee Amelia, said residents are encouraged to bring their trees to one of the sites so they can be chipped and brought to the city’s composting site at the landfill.

“It turns a huge volume of potential waste into value-added products that we end up giving back to residents free of charge every year,” Amelia said.

All residents should remove all ornaments and tinsel from their tree, as well as, plastic bags used to transport the trees to the recycling site because it helps prevent contamination at the compost site.

“And also, for the tree chipping contractor, it could damage their equipment or just take up a lot more time than it needs to getting that material out of there,” Amelia said.

The nine drop-off sites will be open until Jan. 12.
