THUNDER BAY – Cineplex Entertainment is hitting pause on its Christmas movie plans in parts of Ontario including Thunder Bay, as the company awaits an announcement on potential new COVID-19 restrictions from Premier Doug Ford.

On Monday, following an emergency cabinet meeting, Ford is set to address provincial trends he called “very, very concerning” Friday, as daily case numbers topped 2,000 for much of the previous week.

That’s resulted in Cineplex limiting scheduled move showtimes at its theatres in certain Ontairo districts, including SilverCity in Thunder Bay.

“Showtimes in Orange Zones were not extended beyond Monday as we await potential changes to regional restrictions as part of the government’s broader announcement on Monday,” a representative for the company said Saturday. “Following this, we will add showtimes where and when permitted.”

The theatre’s website had added just a handful of scheduled showtimes per day through Wednesday as of Sunday afternoon.

Attendance at screenings is strictly limited in accordance with provincial guidelines, with 15 seats available at many of its screens.
