Citizen could soon get extra cash for good deed

A Thunder Bay citizen may receive $1,110 if the found funds aren’t claimed by their owner.

THUNDER BAY – A good deed may turn out to be beneficial in more ways than one for someone in Thunder Bay.

On June 22, a citizen found $1,100 on the ground while leaving a grocery store. They contacted a supervisor on duty at the store to see if anyone had reported lost money before turning the funds over to the Thunder Bay Police Service.

The TBPS policy on found money is that the finder can apply to the Police Services Board to have the money surrendered to them after 90 days.

That deadline is Friday. If no one has claimed the $1,100 by the end of the day, the money will go to the Good Samaritan.

That decision was made following a vote at the police services board meeting on Tuesday.

Board member Wayne Bahlieda was impressed with the integrity and honesty of the citizen.

“To find $1,100 and to do the right thing and bring it forth and say, look, I found this money ...” Bahlieda said.

“I think of my grandparents or some of the elderly that could have potentially lost that money and that may be rent money, that may be food money.

“This person had the integrity and honesty to bring it forth, bring it to the station.”

Police Chief Darcy Fleury echoed those thoughts.

“They went through the process rather than just pocketing it and walking away . . . I think that’s really good on them,” Fleury said.
