THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay is introducing three new crossing guard locations as of Monday.

In a release issued last week, city officials say the decision was made to add the new locations in order to make walking and biking to school safer for students.

The new sites include Pioneer Drive and Woodcrest Road, Marlborough Street in front of Ecole Gron Morgan and Mary Street and Georgina Avenue.

Students are reminded to use the crosswalks where crossing guards are stationed, to wait until the crossing guard reaches the middle of the crosswalk and says it’s safe to cross, and to walk bicycles, scooters and skateboards across the crosswalk.

Parents are encouraged to drop students a block from school and encourage them to walk the rest of the way and to pay attention to no stopping and no parking signs.

Motorists are asked to stop when they see a crossing guard raise his or her sign, and stay stopped until everyone has safely crossed the road, including the crossing guard.

Drivers should also slow down and keep an eye out for children, especially near schools and not drive distracted.
